What to expect from Arizona Maternity and Women’s Clinic Certified Nurse Midwives.

What is a Midwife?

MidwiferyWhile there are three different types of midwives, in order to become a certified nurse midwife (CNM), one must obtain their Bachelor’s degree in nursing and obtain a master’s degree in nurse-midwifery. It is also necessary to pass a national certification exam. Settings in which CNM’s work include: hospitals. birth centers, and clinics/offices. Your midwives here at AZMWC will attend your birth at Banner Del E.Webb Medical Center which offers an in-hospital birthing center option.

Respectful treatment

Though your body goes through many changes during pregnancy and birth, in most cases, this is a very healthy and normal part of a women’s life and each experience is unique. You can expect gentle nurturing care that respects you, your family, and your beliefs. The midwives will make sure you are knowledgeable and feel confident making informed decisions about your care. The midwives will support your birth plans, making sure to including family members, friends or supports persons you choose to include in your birth. Your midwife will respect the birth process as it unfolds each time, with patience and promise to protect your birth space.

Personal attention

You can expect prenatal visits which afford time for teaching, questions, and answers. These visits often include discussions to help you resolve fears and concerns you or your family may have related to birth. CNMs will always provide caring and individualized attention. Developing a trusting and nurturing relationship with you and your family can help you feel confident to labor and give birth YOUR way.

Natural techniques for comfort:

Midwives have found that encouragement, massage, relaxation, aromatherapy, essential oils, laboring in water, changing positions and other approaches are often very effective during the labor process and help you cope with the discomforts of labor. Your midwife will make sure you have freedom to move, eat, and bathe, to do what helps you during labor and birth: Your midwife doesn’t “prohibit” or “allow” but patiently supports and guides you as needed. Your midwife will make sure you are always informed and an active participant in any decisions made during your birth. This will help you give birth to your baby gently and lovingly. Should you decide on an epidural or pain IV pain management your midwife will order these services as well.

A care provider that stays with you:

Your midwife will provide attentive, sensitive care, and emotional support that is “in tune” with YOUR needs throughout labor. Midwife means “with women” and research has shown that having continuous support throughout active labor and birth reduces the chance of complications and the likelihood of an unnecessary cesarean section. When you are in active labor, your midwife will stay with you and support you protecting your space as necessary along your natural birth journey. Should you elect alternative pain management options, your midwife will ensure that you get some rest. After your baby is born your midwife will stay to make sure breastfeeding is established and both you and baby are resting comfortably. She will arrange a visit after the birth to check on you both and answer any questions.

Appropriate monitoring

Your midwife will provide regular and thorough check-ups for you and baby throughout pregnancy, during labor, and after birth to make sure both of you are healthy and doing well. She will discuss any recommendations for diagnostic technology when appropriate. Certified nurse midwives are experts in normal/natural childbirth. Because they are experts in normal pregnancy and birth, CNMs are experienced in early recognition of variations from normal and early signs of conditions that may indicate a medical condition or complication requiring consultation, collaboration or referral to or with an obstetrician colleague. Your midwives have an obstetrician available at all times. In the event of an obstetric emergency requiring cesarean section, you midwife remains a part of your birth team in the role of “surgical first assistant” never leaving your side.

Do nurse midwives provide healthcare for women outside of pregnancy & birth?

CNMs are well trained to provide gynecological healthcare for women of all ages. Midwives are highly educated on the benefits of a holistic healthcare, their emphasis, before medications or surgery is always on prevention and wellness, healthy lifestyle measures, good nutrition, use of appropriate supplements, and other non-pharmacological or alternative medicine treatment options. Medications are prescribed and/or surgical referrals placed when medically indicated.

My whole experience with Arizona Maternity was beyond beautiful. I'm so thankful for Shaunte and Jocelyn they not only made each visit memorable the care I received from them was truly passionate. The birth of my daughter Brooklyn was magical and Jocelyn was by my side the entire time. Before going to Arizona Maternity I was not educated on what Midwifes do. Jocelyn was my cheerleader she made me feel so comfortable and talked me through every step. I'm so thankful for the team at Arizona Maternity. I will never forget this amazing experience. Thank you so much.
